Working outdoors gave me a greater freedom to paint directly in a responsive expressive way. Its the foundation for most of my landscape and coastal commissions. People get not only what it looks like but also the feel I hope of the wind , scudding clouds overhead or the threat of oncoming rain or snow.
The type of day, hot cold windy whatever the weather became an integral and exciting aspect of my work; With it came the opportunity of translating my feelings directly into paint. The constantly changing rhythm of the world about me forced me to work quicker so that I captured the right moment for me.
Pochades and alla prima are my two favourite painting words. Pochade is a term coined by Monet, Pissarro and the French Impressionists and Post Impressionists in America Russia and Europe. Alla Prima is a style of painting where, instead of building colours up with layers or glazing over an under painting, the painting is completed while the paint is still wet.
