" For me, being a painter is about two things, a sense of place and the nuances of the paint that Im working with. My inspiration comes from the simple act of walking through the land and painting on location both are meditative. Later in the studio I work to distil the essence of this personal experience. Recording and remembering a personal feeling and a direct sense of place at a particular time of day or season is crucial. I work in most mediums but tend towards oils on canvas or on board if smaller in size. Watercolour and drawing also play a huge part in my work. I enjoy the painting process immensly the nuances of paint, the feel of gesture and mark making are central to my work.

"If paintings are about sensations then painting landscapes in wild places whilst feeling the elements is to be really alive. I paint here because I am in awe of these places and I feel compelled to try and capture their rawness. I need to relay what I see in its vast spaces under blue skies or not. I'd like my painting to be seen as similar to visual poetry, each brush mark or line I borrowed from nature is a meditation of a moment or a line in a stanza..
Paint for me, as a medium is truly a complex, infinite, lovely, messy, invasive material with an unknowable array of permutations. To try and bring paint and the action of painting together outdoors in an uncontrolled environment, whether landscape or seascape and make poetry seems at times a mad thing to do. But as each painting ends and hopefully some form of beauty appears I always feel a quiet humility for this wild fragile world and for the sensation sharred ". Rob Miller
